Chiefs defense keys 10-3 win over Chicago Bears

The Kansas City Chiefs defense followed up their best performance of the season last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an even better performance Sunday and beat the Chicago Bears 10-3 at Soldier Field.
The KC defense harassed Chicago quarterback, Caleb Hanie, with a season-high seven sacks, which helped force the young QB into tossing three interceptions, and held the Bears out of the end zone for their fifth victory of the season.
And, in what might be the most fitting piece of the Chiefs’ day considering the kind of season they’ve had offensively, the only touchdown scored by either team was on a 38-yard Hail Mary pass from Chiefs QB Tyler Palko, that running back Dexter McCluster caught as the ball was being batted down to the ground by two Bears’ defenders.
The most improbable touchdown of the year for Kansas City turned out to be the winning points in a game that turned out to be almost as painful to watch for fans of offensive football than it was for two of the key players on the field.

Philadelphia Eagles Have reportedly agreed to a new 6-year, $100 million

The Philadelphia Eagles Have reportedly agreed to a new 6-year, $100 million contract with quarterback Michael Vick.

The deal completes Vick’s comeback a little more than two years after getting out of prison on dogfighting charges.

Vick’s conviction and jail time cost him most of his previous $130 million contract (then the richest in league history) that he signed with the Atlanta Falcons earlier in his career.

Of course, as with all NFL contracts the length and advertised dollar amount are meaningless. Even if Vick is still an Eagle in six years (unlikely), he will almost certainly get a new, renegotiated contract before then.

What does matter is the guaranteed money: $40 million. No matter what happens on the field.

Kansas vs. Colorado Big-12

Kansas holds off Oklahoma State at Big 12 tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Oklahoma State had a good game plan against No. 2 Kansas. If not for all that foul trouble, it might have been good enough to pull off a major upset.
Mario Little's three-point play broke a tie with 71 seconds to go and the depleted Cowboys missed a desperation heave at the buzzer, allowing the Jayhawks to escape with a 63-62 victory Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
Oklahoma State, routed by Kansas last month, led by as many as eight and did a good job of keeping Marcus and Markieff Morris from operating down low, forcing the 14-point favorites to put up an uncharacteristic 25 three-pointers. They made only five and were in trouble the entire game.
"We usually shoot about 30% of our shots as threes," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "When we're playing well, it's more like 10-15%. That's as tight as anybody has played us all year. They went zone. The looks we were going to get were guys open on the perimeter. When the bigs went out, they probably condensed it more and we didn't make them pay."
Marcus Morris, the Big 12 player of the year, had 16 points and 11 rebounds but was shut down for most of the second half until he hit a key three-pointer for the Jayhawks (30-2).
Keiton Page had 23 points and Jean-Paul Olukemi scored 17 for Oklahoma State (19-13). The Cowboys were 18 for 21 from the foul line but had three of their big men foul out. Kansas was only 12 of 21 from the line.
Marcus Morris hadn't made a field goal since the 8:26 mark of the first half when he drilled a 3 that put the Jayhawks ahead 58-54 with 4:07 left.
"The Morris three, from about 35 feet, was the biggest shot of the game," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said. "That was huge. That was bigger than the one we missed at the end."
About 30 seconds after Marcus connected, Markieff fouled out and Olukemi made both foul shots.
With 2:55 to go, Marshall Moses, Oklahoma State's top scorer all season, became the third Cowboys player to go to the bench with his fifth foul. But Page, finding an open space down the middle, hit a floater that made it 60-58.
With 1:28 left, Page tied it at 60 with two more fouls shots, and that's when Little worked inside for a bucket, got fouled and made the free throw for a 63-60 Kansas lead. Olukemi cut the deficit to 63-62 with a 10-foot jumper.
"We were doing everything, all the little things, to try to come up with a win tonight, all the loose rebounds, helping everybody on rotation rebounding," Page said. "Those are the types of things you have to do to win a game against a team like Kansas."
The Jayhawks gave up the ball on a shot-clock violation with 20 seconds left, but Olukemi's desperation heave missed at the buzzer.
"I was praying a little bit at the end," Self said. "We couldn't keep them off the free throw line. I was more concerned about us fouling than them making a shot."
Markieff Morris had 10 points and Brady Morningstar 11 for Kansas, which shot only 36% — far below its nation-leading season average of 51.8%.
The Jayhawks, who beat Oklahoma State 92-65 last month, struggled to regain the lead and Little brought a roar from the partisan Kansas crowd with a three that finally tied it 47-all. Then Tyshawn Taylor, with an assist from Thomas Robinson, got a layup for a 51-50 lead.
"Rio (Little) is our off-the-bench spark," Marcus Morris said. "When he came in with about 1 minutes to go and missed a couple of middle shots, I told him to just stay aggressive because they were small and that gave me a better chance of getting it off of the rebounds."
But the Jayhawks started running into foul trouble of their own. Markieff Morris got his fourth foul with 10:32 to go and 3 minutes later point guard Elijah Johnson picked up his third and fourth fouls within seconds of each other.

NFL lockout of players Is Official

A lockout effectively closes down the league's activities and will halt any trade activities and any other dealings between players and clubs.
Friday the union announced they had 'decertified' and were no longer taking part in collective bargaining over a new deal between the league and players.
"The union's abandonment of bargaining has forced the clubs to take action they very much wanted to avoid. At the recommendation of the Management Council Executive Committee under the authority it has been delegated by the clubs, the league has informed the union that it is taking the difficult but necessary step of exercising its right under federal labor law to impose a lockout of the union," said the statement.

"The clubs are committed to continuing to negotiate until an agreement is reached, and will gladly continue to work with the FMCS (federal mediators)."

Wall among five Kentucky players heading to NBA

John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins delivered on their promise to help coach John Calipari return Kentucky to national prominence.
Next stop, the NBA.
The freshman All-Americans are among five Kentucky players who declared for the NBA draft on Wednesday, an exodus that includes freshman guard Eric Bledsoe, freshman center Daniel Orton and junior forward Patrick Patterson.
Wall and Cousins are expected to be among the first few players selected after leading the Wildcats to a remarkable turnaround season in Calipari's first year on the job.
Kentucky went 35-3 this season — Calipari's first as Wildcats coach — winning the Southeastern Conference regular season and conference tournament titles before falling to West Virginia in the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament.
Calipari met with each player individually and encouraged them to gauge their draft prospects.
"It's extremely unusual for four freshmen from the same team to have this opportunity, but it's my job as a coach to prepare these young men for such opportunities," Calipari said.
Players have until May 8 to change their minds, as long as they don't hire agents. It's highly unlikely any of the five players will come back for another season with the Wildcats.
Certainly not Wall, who was the SEC player of the year after averaging 16.6 points, 6.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds while becoming a highlight-reel staple for his breathtaking play in the open floor.
"I'm not the same player as when I arrived at UK," Wall said in a statement. "I believe I'm ready for the next challenge as Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans were the last two years under Coach Cal."
Calipari said early in the season that Wall was more evolved as a freshman than either Rose and Evans — both of whom starred as point guards for Calipari at Memphis before heading to the NBA.
Wall is a good bet to be the first pick in the draft, the way Rose in 2008.
The 6-foot-4 Wall then spent the next five months largely living up to the hype. He hit a jumper at the buzzer to lift Kentucky to victory over Miami (Ohio) in his first regular season game but did his best to share the spotlight. His 241 assists set a Kentucky single-season record.
Many of those assists came courtesy of baskets by Cousins, the SEC freshman of the year who will likely join Wall as one of the first players drafted. The 6-11, 270-pound center averaged 15.1 points and 9.8 rebounds, numbers that could have been significantly higher if he hadn't struggled with foul trouble and his temper early in the season that severely limited his playing time.

Charles, Yori win AP player and coach awards

Tina Charles sat next to Maya Moore at the AP Awards ceremony Saturday fully expecting to congratulate her teammate on winning another trophy.
UConn's star center was completely shocked when she ended up being the one picking up the award.
"I loved her reaction because it was so genuine," Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma said. "Now she's going into this weekend thinking I'm getting recognized for what I've done."
Charles got 33 of the votes from the 40-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25 to earn The Associated Press player of the year honor. Nebraska's Connie Yori was voted the AP's coach of the year.
Charles, who holds both the career scoring and rebounding record for Connecticut's powerhouse program, has been the anchor in the middle for the Huskies during their NCAA record 76-game winning streak. However, her low expectations were understandable. Moore won this award as a sophomore last season and, earlier Saturday, Moore picked up her second straight Wade Trophy as the top player in women's college basketball.
"For this day to end the way it did for Tina is absolutely perfect," Auriemma said. "No one deserves it more."
Auriemma brought the entire team to the ceremony without saying why they were there. The surprise and being surrounded by her teammates made the honor even more special for Charles.
"I want to thank all the individuals who pushed me, all the individuals who told me to keep doing it," said a beaming Charles.
Moore finished second in the balloting with four votes. She said she's seen Charles grow since the NCAA tournament last year, "the way she dominated and the way she played with that attitude."
"She's relentless and got us really excited and I was confident what she was going to do for us," Moore said. "She came through 100 percent and then some."
Charles credits Moore with her success this season.
"When you see someone succeeding that's something you want to be part of," Charles said. "That's even more rewarding. She's outstanding at practice and pushes me, always challenging me and teaching me what it is to compete."
Charles is the seventh UConn player to win award. She averaged 18.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, and shot 63.5 percent from the field to help UConn move within two victories of becoming the first team ever to go undefeated in consecutive seasons.
UConn's stellar senior will have her name hang high above the Gampel Pavilion court in Storrs, Conn., with past winners Rebecca Lobo, Kara Wolters, Diana Taurasi, Jennifer Rizzotti, Moore, and Sue Bird.
Yori guided Nebraska on one of the biggest turnarounds in NCAA history, going from 15-16 last season to winning their first 30 games before losing in the Big 12 tournament semifinals, then reached the regional semifinals for the first time in school history.
"This season has been a perfect storm," Yori said. "You've got a lot of things that fell into place for us."
Her team went from being picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 to having a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
"It's more than just about the season," she added. "This has been the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of people — the coaching staff, players past and present. They deserve all the accolades that have come their direction as well."
Yori became the first Big 12 coach to win the award, which has been given out since 1995. She received 28 votes while Auriemma got 10. Pat Summitt of Tennessee and Rizzotti of Hartford each got a vote.
