The 27-year-old star is serving one year behind bars for attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
Lil Wayne, real name Dwayne Carter, started his sentence in New York last month.
He reportedly "likes the job" despite the poor pay.
Ex-girlfriend Antonia Johnson said: "Wayne has a job, they got him on suicide watch for other prisoners.
"He watches the crazy prisoners and makes sure they don't kill themselves."
She added: "He likes the job even though they don't pay him much."
Antonia is the mother of Wayne's first child Reginae, who was born when he was 15.
Meanwhile, Lil Wayne's fansite is looking foward to his release, with a timer counting the days until he is free.
